If you are interested in helping the Newport Rotary Club remove Microplastic from our beaches, first you need to know some things about the volunteer duties expected of you. We want you to have a safe and positive experience, so please read the following. Before signing up below to reserve a date and time for your volunteer placement.

  1. Weather – The weather on the Oregon Coast can change at any time. Fog can roll in and wind can pick up during our summer months. If it rains before, or during, your reserved clean-up time, you will be notified and volunteer duties for that day will be canceled.
  2. Dress – Because the temperature can change, we suggest that you dress in layers. Dress lightly when the sun is out and cover up when the sun hides. Wear a hat to protect yourself from the sun. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from blowing sand.
  3. Snacks – Your volunteer duties will last 2 hours. You may want to bring water and an energy bar.
  4. Lifting Weight – You may be asked to carry a screen to your designated beach location. Each screen weighs 12 pounds. We recommend that 20 pounds of sand/debris be placed on each screen before sifting…two individuals will lift the screen. At the end of your 2-hour volunteer assignment, you may be asked to lift 20 pounds of Microplastic back to the designated meeting area.
  5. Designated Meeting Area – Please be at the designated meeting area at least 10 minutes before your reserved time. A map will be provided to the site. Please keep in mind that we have heavy traffic during the summer months. Beach Cleanup Supervisors will check-in volunteers before departing to the beach at the 9:00 a.m. each day.
  6. Cancellation – If for some reason you need to cancel, please send a message to volunteer@eco-friendlyvolunteer.org If weather prohibits beach clean-up on any particular day, you will be notified by email.
  7. Walking depending on where and what beach you are assigned, you may need to walk as far as 1 mile to get to your location. Some beaches may require that you walk downstairs or a steep grade.
  8. Participatory Waiver Form – All volunteers 18 years and older will be required to sign a liability wavier form. Parents and/or guardians of children 5 years and older will be required to sign a liability form on their behalf. We do not encourage family members under 5 years of age to participate.
  9. Thank You Tickets – At the completion of your 2-hour clean-up duties, volunteers will be given a ticket for a free soft drink at one of our participating restaurants.
  10. Evaluation – All adult volunteers will be encouraged to complete an online evaluation form. Those who complete the form will have their names automatically entered into a contest with various prizes such as a 2-night stay from one of our participating hotels and dinner for 2 from our participating restaurants.
